slides

I guess I like these types of slides... Three years went by between these photos. The first was taken in winter 2005, in Inwood, Manhattan, when I just started taking photos. The second is from winter 2008, in Long Island City, Queens.

entry into sunnyside yard

I found an entrance into the yard at the Queens blvd crossing, the one that leads out of the Queensboro bridge. I couldn't really get any successful photos though, this one of the entrance is probably more interesting.

On another note, I've been listening to this Ceremony cover by Radiohead. For those who aren't familiar with it, Ceremony was originally a Joy Division song, performed only a few times live before lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. I don't think it was ever studio recorded by Joy Division. It was later recorded and released by New Order (the surviving members of Joy Division +1). I always liked this song - even without knowing its history, you can tell that the song didn't really belong to New Order. It's got a very different feel from the rest of New Order.

ghost tracks

always need to look this one up

I doubt I'll ever remember how to spell "Guggenheim." Well, maybe after this post. They don't allow photos in the museum, but I managed to sneak this one.

café aubergine

This is probably my favorite café in Sunnyside, tied maybe with Café La Flor. 50th and Skillman. The awnings have faded a bit since the first time I went a couple of years ago, but the food is still good.

steve and adam

The Steve Blanco Trio play jazz regularly at Domaine. This is Adam Roberts and Steve, about a year ago at the Baggott Inn.

color

Not sure if I pulled it off in the photo but the green designs and blue car made for some nice color on an otherwise gray day.

a little bit of paris in chinatown

I walked by this place a couple of weeks ago and then, funny enough, Ricky posted about it here. 113 Mott St. They sell Vietnamese-style sandwiches. I've never been inside but Ricky and I sometimes go to their competitor.

The competing store is actually pretty funny. While the front of the store advertises the bakery, when you look in you can really only see jewelry being sold. The bakery is all the way in the back of the store. The first time Ricky brought me and some coworkers there, we were confused, if not a little scared, as to where he was taking us. It was like getting some secret underground sandwiches, hidden by a jewely store storefront. See Ricky's post about it here.

in need of a drink

Been a long week. Ok, I'm running out of photos - I need to go out and shoot.

under "construction"

I mean, really, how ridiculous is this? The first time I walked by this restaurant a few years back, on the corner of Steinway and Northern Boulevard, I didn't think the faux-bricks could look worse. They hadn't started "crumbling" at the time...

peeping tom - shower scene

And what were you expecting exactly? There is a large railroad yard in my neighborhood called, not surprisingly, Sunnyside Yard. You can get a good view of it on the 7 train between the Queensboro Bridge and 33rd Street stops. Here's a closer look at the shower:

I'd like to get more photos of the Yard but unfortunately, the bridges have either metal-wire gates or tall metal panels that block the view. This photo was taken through the small slit between panels. It's possible I can get a better view from the Queens Boulevard crossing (this is from the 39th St. crossing).

Oops, I missed a post yesterday. I was going to backdate this one but decided against it.

bethesda terrace

Everyone's always taking photos of the fountain, but I find this more interesting. This is the passage at Bethesda Terrace that goes under Terrace Drive, providing access to the mall in Central Park. I couldn't really find much information on it unfortunately.
